Our story

Horse & Hound Hilltop Haven was created from a simple belief:
Every animal deserves a safe place to land — not just when they are young, useful, or easy, but especially when they are old, tired, or forgotten.

Located in Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, our rescue is a sanctuary-style haven dedicated to horses and dogs who need more than temporary help. Many of the animals who arrive here are not passing through on their way to adoption. They are home.

The idea for Horse & Hound Hilltop Haven began after seeing how many horses never receive the retirement they deserve. When their working years end, too many enter the slaughter pipeline simply because there is nowhere else for them to go. With available land and a deep love for animals, the opportunity became a responsibility — to create a place where those horses could live out their days with dignity, safety, and care.

While horses are at the heart of the sanctuary, we also help dogs within our community — providing support, placement assistance, and safe refuge when needed.

What makes Hilltop Haven different is our focus on long-term care. We specialize in senior and sanctuary-need animals: the ones overlooked by traditional rescues because they require lifelong commitment rather than quick adoption. Here, they are not temporary projects. They are permanent residents.

Since opening, we have provided a safe landing for ten horses and have helped many dogs in our community — each one reminding us that rescue is not only about saving lives, but about honoring them.

Where It Really Began

Before there was Horse & Hound Hilltop Haven, there was a hound named Smokey.

I found Smokey while roadtripping home from my freshman year of college after he had been hit by a car. Bringing him home and helping him heal wasn’t exactly what anyone expected from a college student — but from the moment he arrived, he changed everything.

Smokey filled days that felt uncertain with purpose and joy. He made me slow down, take breaks for long walks, and enjoy simple moments. He brought me friendships, daily laughter, and confidence — the kind that comes from knowing you are cared for, and caring in return. He was my constant companion, and in many ways, I was nothing without him.

He was also there when I met my husband, Chris. Together we walked through life with Smokey at our side, learning that a dog in your twenties can shape the rest of your life in ways you never imagined.

He taught me animals don’t need perfect anything — they need our love and permanence.
HHHH grew from that first promise: that when an animal needs someone to stay, there will always be a place that does.

Built on a promise to one dog — kept for many.
